Hair Removal Q & A

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure where Dr. Gligoric uses a Cynosure® laser to remove unwanted body hair with highly concentrated light. The hair follicles absorb the light and convert it into heat. The heat damages the hair follicles to prevent or delay hair regrowth. To find out if laser hair removal is right for you, schedule an appointment with the providers at Ageless Laser Med Spa.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal offers long-term results but it is not a permanent solution for most people. You may also need multiple hair removal treatments to remove your hair initially, followed by maintenance treatments to prevent future hair growth. Most people see a significant reduction in hair growth after three to seven laser hair removal sessions.

What hair can be removed with laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal tends to be most effective for people with light skin and dark hair. It can be used to effectively remove and delay the growth of:

  • Facial hair
  • Sideburns
  • Mustaches
  • Chin/beard hair
  • Arm hair
  • Leg hair
  • Hand hair
  • Feet hair
  • Chest hair
  • Bikini area hair
  • Armpit hair
  • Back hair

Laser hair removal is not recommended for use on eyebrows, eyelids, or any area close to the eyes due to the potential of eye injury by the laser.

What are the side effects of hair removal?

Laser hair removal may cause temporary side effects, including skin irritation and pigment changes. Redness, swelling, and temporary discomfort are common side effects experienced within the first few hours after laser hair removal procedures. Some people experience temporary skin pigment changes where the treated areas may appear darker or lighter after treatment.

Less common side effects include scarring, crusting, or blistering of the skin at the treatment site or graying of treated hair. For people with darker skin, there is a risk of excessive hair growth occurring around areas treated with laser hair removal.
